Their boots and shoes have been prevalent in British culture since the first boots were produced in 1960 with their distinctive yellow stitching and grooved soles. Their original boot design, now known as the 1460, was created by Dr. Klaus Märtens, a German army doctor, who developed a more comfortable alternative to traditional army boots.

Their boots and shoes have been important to many youth subcultures during their time, featuring in eras such as the punk, new wave and grunge movements. Whilst they have evolved their design and catered to change by introducing vegan-friendly options by using synthetic materials instead of leather.
